Our client is looking for a Data Designer

SUMMARY

For supporting the modernization and further evolution of its in-house Gas Flow Management application suite (“GSmart”), Our client in Belgium is actively looking for a Data Designer to integrate in its agile development teams, who will be involved in all aspects of the services, including new projects and developments, technical upgrades, bug resolution and incident management.

CONTEXT

Considering the growing number of business requests and the modernization program of GSmart, our client is actively looking for a data designer that will participate to the analysis & implementation of data warehouses, datamarts and visuals. This also involves the definition & setup of data sources & related connections. The modernization program prepares the company in handling the new green gasses like H2, biomethane and CO2 & streamlining the existing application towards a modular and efficient IT architecture.

The current data platform is based on Microsoft’s on-premise stack for data and analytics: SQL Server and its integrated services: SSIS, SSAS, and SSRS.

The company has also actively set up a program dedicated to business intelligence and advanced analytics, called “Smart Data Factory” (SmDF). In this initiative we are preparing the gradual migration towards the Azure Data & Analytics stack. There is a close collaboration between the data & analytics teams at GFM and SmDF, that will be further intensified in the future.

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

As a Data Designer, you will specialize in transforming complex datasets into clear, intuitive, and visually appealing representations that enable stakeholders to understand and analyze information effectively. You will manage central data warehouses and handle all reporting needs from functional product processes (e.g. contracting, flow planning, invoicing, data publication).

Your responsibilities include capturing reporting requirements, designing the transformation plan in load diagrams, maintaining data dictionaries, testing/reviewing the implemented reporting solution and acceptance with the business stake holders. You will also analyze support requests to propose solutions that reduce recurring issues and perform technical analysis on Gas Flow Management databases to identify and structure the data required for optimal usability and clarity.

As a data designer you

  • Collaborate with the team to break down a business requirement into estimated user stories, refine them to tasks and deliver user stories within a sprint
  • Analyse user stories and design an appropriate conceptual model, while respecting the existing architecture and systems
  • Document data load design &the semantic layer using UML-artifacts (use case diagrams, information models,…) using the company's standard tools and methodology
  • Handover analysis to data engineer clarifying models, requirements and business context.
  • Create and execute test scenarios on different levels (component, system, UAT)
  • Collaborate with Business on the creation of Power BI reports
  • Assist the users during the execution of user acceptance tests
  • Challenge and review your analysis, documentation and test results with team members and vice versa
  • Provide support to end-users on data lineage & data transformation decisions
  • Analyse the support work and propose improvements to reduce the amount of support

SKILLS & EXPERTISE

Our candidate is a data designer with

  • Deep knowledge of the Ralph Kimball’s data warehousing concepts
  • Proven experience in conceptual data modelling and design skills
  • Strong communication skills to interview end-users: listening actively to their needs, asking the right questions and interpreting the answers critically and correctly.
  • Good analytical and synthesizing skills to clearly define problems and requirements as well as to determine solutions for data reporting
  • A strong team player with a goal-directed attitude
  • Able to fluently communicate in English (spoken and written)

Above skills are considered essential (“Must”). Additionally, candidates should have

  • Good knowledge of SQL (mainly DML)
  • Experience working in an Agile environment

Following skills are considered an asset

  • Ability to fluently communicate in Dutch (spoken) and/or French (spoken)
  • Experience with at least one of the data & analytics suite tools (and be interested to learn the other):
    • Azure analytics suite tools (Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake, Azure Analysis Services, Azure Databricks, Azure Synapse,…)
    • Microsoft SQL Server data warehouses, SSRS, SSIS and SSAS
  • Background knowledge in the energy sector
  • Knowledge of PowerBI
  • Knowledge of UML
  • Experience providing support to end-users
  • Fluency in the use of the following tools
    • Data management in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
    • Documentation / Communication tools (e.g. Microsoft Office)
