Our client is looking for an experienced Business Analyst to act as the key link between business stakeholders and IT teams. You will translate business needs into clear requirements and effective technical solutions that support operational efficiency and strategic objectives.
You will analyse end-to-end processes, structure business information, define requirements and support the design, implementation and validation of new solutions.
The role requires a continuous-improvement mindset. You are curious, constructively critical and willing to challenge existing ways of working to create smarter and future-ready processes.
Project context
You will work within the National Control Center in the Network Calculation domain.
The National Control Center plays a central role in the day-to-day management of Belgium’s electricity grid. The Network Calculation domain is responsible for:
- Modelling the electricity grid
- Building operational scenarios
- Performing grid and risk analyses
- Supporting the secure and reliable operation of the electricity network
Given the complexity and business-critical nature of the environment, the client is looking for someone who can commit to the assignment for at least three years.
Responsibilities
Business process modelling
- Analyse and model end-to-end business processes using BPMN.
- Clearly distinguish between business processes and application processes.
- Identify improvement opportunities within existing processes.
- Ensure processes are aligned with organisational objectives and business architecture.
- Collaborate with the Business Architect to further improve the business architecture.
Information modelling
- Structure and represent business concepts clearly and consistently.
- Create information models using UML class diagrams.
- Introduce new business concepts and define them precisely.
- Review, challenge and refine existing concepts and definitions.
- Understand the relationship between capabilities, information ownership and information models.
- Maintain consistency and alignment of information across systems and business domains.
Requirements gathering and analysis
- Elicit, clarify and prioritise functional and non-functional requirements.
- Facilitate workshops with business stakeholders and development teams.
- Translate business needs into clear and actionable requirements.
- Refine user stories and Product Backlog Items to a level at which developers can work independently.
- Define acceptance criteria and ensure requirements are aligned with business objectives.
- Work closely with the Product Owner to define and maintain the backlog.
- Constructively challenge stakeholder assumptions and proposed approaches.
Solution design and validation
- Collaborate closely with the Solution Architect while respecting the boundaries between both roles.
- Evaluate whether proposed solutions meet current and future business requirements.
- Represent and safeguard the business architecture during solution design.
- Monitor alignment with business principles, capabilities and strategic objectives.
- Challenge solutions when they are not sustainable, scalable or future-proof.
Testing and quality assurance
- Take ownership of relevant testing activities within the Agile team.
- Create clear test cases based on user stories and acceptance criteria.
- Support or perform business acceptance testing.
- Participate in sprint reviews and defect-triage sessions.
- Help prioritise defects, fixes and improvements.
- Maintain traceability between requirements, acceptance criteria and test coverage.
- Promote a “test early, test often” mindset.
Documentation
- Produce clear, accurate and structured documentation.
- Document business processes, requirements, information models and solution decisions.
- Improve documentation practices and consistency within the team.
- Provide guidance on maintaining high-quality documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
Ownership and leadership
- Take ownership of business needs from initial analysis through implementation.
- Identify problems and proactively propose improvements.
- Drive agreed improvements towards implementation.
- Ensure that solutions deliver measurable business value.
- Communicate proactively and precisely with all relevant stakeholders.
- Help stakeholders and delivery teams successfully implement change.
Required experience and competencies
- Five to eight years of experience in business analysis and requirements elicitation.
- Proven experience working in an Agile software-development environment.
- Strong experience with business process and requirements analysis.
- Ability to translate complex business needs into clear and workable Product Backlog Items.
- Strong knowledge of BPMN and UML.
- Very good command of English and Dutch and/or French.
- Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
- Autonomous and proactive working style.
- Strong communication and workshop-facilitation skills.
- Precise and structured approach to stakeholder communication.
- Ability to challenge stakeholders constructively and diplomatically.
Strong assets
- Knowledge of BABOK and its application within software development.
- Knowledge of ArchiMate.
- Experience with business architecture and capability modelling.
- Experience or knowledge of electrical network management.
- Previous experience in an energy, utilities or other business-critical operational environment.
