Our client is looking for a Medior Energy Scenarios Analyst to join the Future Energy Scenarios team within the Scenarios, Market & Adequacy Analysis (SMA) department.
Context
The Belgian Transmission System Operator carries out a broad range of activities beyond operating and developing the electricity grid. These include system planning, market-related studies, security of supply assessments and analyses supporting future network investments.
These activities rely on modelling tools that simulate the electricity system and assess key indicators such as capacity needs, market outcomes and system adequacy over long-term horizons.
Within the SMA team, the Future Energy Scenarios team develops short- and long-term energy outlooks and future electricity system scenarios that serve as key inputs for market and adequacy studies.
The purpose of this assignment is to provide additional on-site support to the team in the development, maintenance and analysis of these future energy scenarios.
The consultant will contribute to defining and maintaining assumptions describing the future evolution of the power sector in Belgium and other major European countries. This includes analysing trends in electricity consumption across sectors such as transport, heating and industry, as well as developments in renewable and conventional generation technologies.
A strong understanding of the European electricity sector and the energy transition is therefore essential.
Key Responsibilities
The consultant will support different projects within the Future Energy Scenarios team and will be responsible for:
- Collecting, consolidating and critically assessing energy scenario data for Belgium and other European countries.
- Challenging assumptions, projections and data quality rather than simply processing available information.
- Analysing trends related to electricity demand, including transport electrification, heating and industrial consumption.
- Analysing developments in electricity generation, including renewable and conventional technologies.
- Ensuring that projections are consistent with predefined scenario storylines.
- Contributing to and improving data collection processes and scenario development methodologies.
- Consolidating historical data into model input datasets.
- Collecting projection scenarios from European countries and comparing them with internal assumptions.
- Reviewing and challenging scenario data based on policy developments, market trends and decarbonisation objectives.
- Preparing presentations, workshops and supporting material for internal and external stakeholders.
- Supporting stakeholder consultations and processing input received through public sources, industry exchanges and consultation processes.
- Developing, maintaining and reviewing analytical tools in R, Python, Excel and potentially VBA.
- Preparing and modifying data and parameters used as input for market and power system simulation tools.
- Supporting the analysis of outputs generated by simulation tools such as ANTARES.
- Creating and improving data visualisations using tools such as R, Python, Power BI or QGIS.
- Supporting the team’s weekly market intelligence newsletter.
Energy Market Expertise
The consultant should have a strong interest in and understanding of the European electricity market and energy transition.
The role requires knowledge of:
- The Belgian and European electricity sector.
- Energy transition trends.
- European and national energy policies.
- Regulatory developments affecting the power sector.
- Decarbonisation strategies.
- Electricity demand evolution.
- Renewable and conventional generation technologies.
- Long-term energy and electricity market scenarios.
The consultant should be comfortable questioning existing assumptions and challenging projections for Belgium and other major European countries.
Experience with electricity market modelling, power system simulations or similar market studies is considered an advantage.
Technical Requirements
R / Python — Must have
Strong proficiency in R or Python is required.
R is extensively used in existing SMA tools, while newer tools are increasingly being developed in Python.
Experience with both technologies is considered an advantage.
Excel — Must have
Strong knowledge of Excel is required.
Excel is frequently used within the team for:
- Data analysis.
- Data exploration.
- Scenario databases.
- Interfaces for R and Python scripts.
- Model input preparation.
VBA — Nice to have
Experience with VBA is considered an advantage.
ANTARES — Nice to have
Experience with ANTARES or other electricity market simulation tools is considered an advantage.
ANTARES is an economic dispatch tool developed by RTE, the French Transmission System Operator, and is used to simulate the electricity market on an hourly basis.
The tool requires large quantities of input data and can generate significant output datasets. Scripts and spreadsheets are therefore used to prepare inputs, retrieve outputs and analyse simulation results.
Experience with other market simulation or economic dispatch tools can also be considered relevant.
Data Visualisation — Nice to have
Experience with one or more of the following tools is considered valuable:
- R
- Python
- Power BI
- QGIS
Stakeholder Management
Previous experience coordinating stakeholder input or consultation processes is required.
The consultant should be comfortable:
- Interacting with internal and external stakeholders.
- Collecting information through stakeholder exchanges.
- Preparing workshops and presentations.
- Processing consultation feedback.
- Presenting and explaining scenario assumptions.
- Supporting alignment between different stakeholders.

- Location: Empereur and potentially other locations depending on where the SMA team is working.
- The location will be communicated at least one week in advance.
